Mom Found 'Not Guilty' of Child Abuse in School Gun Case

A jury found Aubrey Wilson not guilty of fourth-degree child abuse, after her 7-year-old child brought an unloaded handgun to a Grand Rapids elementary school.

On May 3, 2023, Wilson’s child brought the handgun into Cesar E. Chavez Elementary. Another student reported to staff that the student had the gun. When teachers and staff searched the student’s backpack, they found the handgun, which was not loaded and did not have a magazine.

Wilson however was found guilty of lying to police during a serious misdemeanor investigation, a charge that was later added. Wilson’s fiancée, Chelsea Berkley, also faces a charge in the case. She was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.
