Georgetown firefighters rescue dog after she falls through Cedar Lake East

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Call it a "labrador retrieval."

A black labrador called Hazel is doing fine today after falling through the ice on Cedar Lake East on Tuesday.

It happened around 1:40 p.m.. In a social media post, Georgetown Charter Township says firefighters responded wearing cold-water rescue suits and ropes tethered to personnel on shore. Fire Chief Matt DeWitt says Hazel was exhausted and had ice forming on her face and nose. But she's doing well now. He says it's important to keep an eye on pets and kids that might mistake snow-covered ice for solid ground.

"The dog was extremely exhausted and had ice forming on its face and nose when we arrived,” Fire Chief DeWitt said in the post. “We were thankful that we got to reunite Hazel with her owner and that no one was injured.”
