This morning, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel filed an emergency parole appeal in the 22nd Circuit Court in Washtenaw County to reverse parole granted to 44-year-old John Robert Lee, which had been scheduled for tomorrow.
According to the news release, Lee pled no contest back in 1999 to kidnapping at gunpoint and first-degree criminal sexual conduct in the rape of a 13-year-old girl. Lee did not dispute the facts of his crimes, and was given two consecutive life sentences, with the possibility of parole.
Upon review, the Department of AG concluded that based on clear records of his incarceration and attempted treatment, Lee has exhibited no "appropriate understanding of his wrongdoing", nor shown any remorse that indicates he wouldn't attempt similar wrongdoing should he be released on parole, posing a risk to the community Nessel says cannot be ignored.
Judge Carol Kuhnke granted the motion to stay Lee’s parole pending the Attorney General’s appeal this morning. Lee will remain incarcerated while the appeal is heard. A status conference has been set for January 30th.
