The families of two people who drowned in Lake Michigan are suing the city of South Haven, claiming the city should have done more to keep them out of the water.
22-year-old Kory Ernster and his 19-year-old girlfriend Emily Macdonald drowned at South Beach in South Haven back in August of last year. Bystanders noticed the pair were unresponsive in the water before pulling them ashore and beginning CPR, but by that point it had been too late.
They were pronounced dead at a local hospital. Yellow flags had been flying at the beach when the pair decided to go into the lake, signaling moderate surf currents and advising caution. Red flags were raised later in the day.
The victim's families accuse the city of South Haven of negligence and argue that the city should have known how dangerous the lake conditions were that day, and that the yellow flags did not adequately warn beachgoers of the danger.
The lawsuit seeks damages in excess of 25 thousand dollars.
