On Monday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer forgave Muskegon Heights Publics School's state debt, positioning the district and the community for future success.
According to a news release, Muskegon Heights is among a handful of other districts across the state to receive debt forgiveness, including Pontiac, Benton Harbor, Ypsilanti and Inkster. Whitmer signed House Bill 4292 and Senate Bill 174, providing $114 million in school district emergency loan debt relief.
As part of the debt relief, MHPS will develop strategic plans for increased student enrollment, attracting and retaining certified teachers, and capital improvements. The district will also offer school board training focused on finances.
Overall objectives include increased attendance and graduation rates.
