The State of Michigan is warning dog owners to be careful, as concerns about a mysterious canine respiratory illness are on the rise.
According to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural development, the disease, which has been reported in several states, is generally contagious. Symptoms include coughing, sneezing, nasal and eye discharge, fever, loss of appetite and lethargy.
Coughing can reportedly continue for months, and in most serious cases, can progress to life-threatening pneumonia.
While no cases have been reported in Michigan dogs, the department is encouraging dog owners to work with veterinarians by ensuring their pets are up to date on their vaccines, and to reach out if their dogs showcase any symptoms.
