GRPD raids area smoke shops, motivated by recent Burton Heights violence

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Grand Rapids Police say they recovered more than 30 pounds of bulk marijuana and hundreds of retail-size packages of marijuana buds during a raid.

It was conducted last Thursday, Nov. 9, as officers used search warrants to raid both locations of Flavors/Flavors Smoke Shop (517 Leonard St NW and 2332 Division Ave S). PMC Private Stock, also located at 2332 Division Ave S, was included in the warrant.

Also rounded up were T-H-C vape cartridges, infused edibles and stolen property. Police say recent violence in Burton Heights and word that a suspect in a Milwaukee homicide frequented those locations prompted them to execute the search warrants. They say the suspect, Julian Kelley, is in custody.

On Nov. 6, Malik Eubanks, Anayia Rodriguez and Daryl Yarber were fatally shot in Burton Heights.

Here is more information from a GRPD news release:

The Flavor locations are not legally licensed to sell cannabis/THC products. Some of the inventory recovered is consistent with the types of products stolen from legal dispensaries in the area.

The investigation into suspected connections to other criminal activity in Grand Rapids and West Michigan is ongoing, including cars being stolen for the purpose of committing smash and grab burglaries, fencing stolen goods, and the illegal sale of cannabis products.

“We are gratified to assist our counterparts in Milwaukee in bringing justice for their murder victim’s family,” said Chief Eric Winstrom. “Even more so that the raids resulted in evidence of criminal activity that directly impacts us here in Grand Rapids, in our community. I am hopeful that when all the evidence and all the leads are followed, we will be able to make more arrests. This was excellent work by our detectives and local law enforcement partners.”
