Grand Rapids Fire Department hosting 52nd annual awards ceremony

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Grand Rapids Fire Department hosts its 52nd annual awards ceremony Thursday evening.

It will be at The High Five building on LaGrave Avenue, beginning at 5 o'clock. There will also be firefighter promotions and a 2023 Firefighter of the Year presentation. Capt. Bill Smith tells WOOD Radio that award is going to Lt. Matt Hutter.

He has been with the fire department since 2011, and is assigned to the training center.

"Imparting his knowledge onto our Class of '22 that just started on October 30," Smith said. "So, he's going to be with them for the duration, and then he'll back out to (fire) suppression as a lieutenant. That's a fire officer that would be in charge of either an engine or a truck company."
