GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Chief Eric Winstrom says Grand Rapids Police are investigating two homicides within four blocks of each other on the city's southeast side.
At a noon-hour news briefing near one of the scenes, he said two dead bodies were found in the vicinity of Horton Avenue near Melville Street. That is north of Alger Street and east of Division Avenue. But as of that time Chief Winstrom wasn't ready to confirm that the victims had been shot.
"Because of the blood, because of some obvious injuries to the body, we went forward and said it was likely a shooting investigation. But we're going to backtrack on that and say it is a murder investigation. But as far as the manner of killing, we're not to that point yet. And the medical examiner is on their way out," Winstrom said.
He said neither of the victims had identification on them. So, police are looking to speak to any witnesses. They can come forward to the GRPD or contact Silent Observer anonymously.
"From the beginning, it's a mystery. I think we will be able to put it together and get some answers soon. I just don't have them yet," Winstrom said.
