Crash reconstructionists determine 17-year-old caused fatal April crash

OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. -- After months of investigation, accident reconstructionists have determined that a 17-year-old from Allendale was the at-fault driver in a fatal crash last spring.

It happened at 64th Avenue and Pierce Street on the night of April 11th, a little after 7 o'clock.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office originally figured a 27-year-old Holland woman was responsible for the crash, because her car (a Volkswagen) pulled out into the path of a (GMC) pickup truck driven by the 17-year-old male.

But now, investigators have determined that the pickup truck was speeding at the time, so the 17-year-old was actually the at-fault driver. The Sheriff's Office says he has been referred to Juvenile Court on charges of Reckless Driving Causing Death and Reckless Driving Causing Serious Injury.

Police say a backseat driver in the car, 26-year-old Madeleine Martin of Allendale, was killed in the crash. The driver and another passenger (a 26-year-old woman from Allendale) in that car suffered serious injuries. They all were wearing seatbelts at the time.
