Mel Trotter Ministries accepting winter coats as cold weather arrives

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- As more and more leaves fall from the trees, it is a reminder that homeless people will need warm winter clothing.

You can drop off winter apparel at the Mel Trotter Ministries' homeless shelter at 225 Commerce Avenue. That is just south of Cherry Street. Items also can be dropped off at one of the Mel Trotter Thrift Store locations or at one of its partner locations with the Blue Barrels up.

Mel Trotter is partnering with Mercantile Bank to collect new or nearly winter coats and clothing for people in need. For the next three months, these items can be dropped off at these Mercantile Bank locations in Kent County:

Mercantile Bank, 310 Leonard St. NW

Mercantile Bank, 3156 Knapp St. NE

Mercantile Bank, 4737 Cascade Rd. SE

Mercantile Bank, 4613 Alpine Ave. NW

Mercantile Bank, 5610 Byron Center Ave. SW
