EGLE identifies PFAS contamination site in Fruitland Township

FRUITLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The Michigan PFAS Action Response Team has listed a former landfill site in Muskegon County as the latest location it is monitoring for contamination.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has been providing  oversight as Fruitland Township samples drinking water wells near the former landfill in the direction of groundwater flow.

The recycling site is on West Michillinda Road in Fruitland Township. The state says it operated from the 1950s to the 1970s, when waste was placed in unlined trenches. It also says the township performed an initial environmental investigation in May, sampling groundwater monitoring wells. The state says PFAS compounds were found, so the township agreed to sample some drinking water wells at homes near the former landfill.

According to the state: " Sampling results identified PFAS compounds in groundwater above criteria in one of the groundwater monitoring wells. The highest detected PFOS concentration was 567.8 ppt and the highest detected PFOA concentration was 97.1 ppt. Based upon these results, Fruitland Township agreed to sample select drinking water wells at homes in the direction of groundwater flow near the former landfill.

Groundwater under the former landfill has been measured to flow towards the south-southwest. The nearest surface water body is Duck Creek, which is located approximately 0.7 miles south."

Municipal water is not available in this area and all homes are serviced by private drinking water wells. Fruitland Township will be sampling drinking water wells at homes within the sample area on Nestrom Road, south of West Michillinda Road and north of Duck Creek. Sampling was scheduled to begin on September 15, 2023.
