GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- As we head into bow-hunting season, the West Michigan Bowhunters group is trying to protect hunters by educating them about safety.
Scott Overweg is a board member and past president of the Safari Club International Michigan Bowhunters.
"We have, already this year, done classes for over 300 people - for hunter-safety classes. And we're hoping to do more yet this year," Overweg said on West Michigan's Morning News.
The West Michigan Bowhunters serves as the local chapter for the international organization.
Overweg says they also are teaching archery in four local schools with a polo/archery set-up.
"We can't believe how many people - young people, old people - I think a third of the people who are taking a class are over 18. And we have a lot of females who say ... 'I want to go and hunt with my husband.' And they're loving it. There's a group of gals going hunting by themselves. It was never heard of 20 years ago. It's just wonderful," Overweg said.
