POLKTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office says the driver of a pickup truck died in a crash on I-96 on Wednesday morning, near Coopersville.
It happened just before 10 o'clock. Deputies say a 1997 Chevrolet Silverado was heading west on I-96 in Polkton Township when it was struck from behind by a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. That was near freeway exit 15.
Police say the impact caused the pickup to veer off the road and roll over, pinning the driver inside. Deputies say rescue crews from the Polkton and Allendale fire departments pulled the 30-year-old driver from Muskegon out of the truck, but it was too late. They say that person died at the scene. Police did not say right away whether it was a man or woman who was killed.
The people in the Malibu - a 28-year-old Muskegon woman and a three-year-old girl - were not injured. Everyone in both vehicles had their seatbelts on at the time.
The westbound lanes of I-96 were closed for a few hours during investigation and cleanup of the crash.
The OCSO is still investigating the crash.
