ArtPrize 2023 ready to roll in downtown Grand Rapids on Thursday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The international ArtPrize competition and cultural event kicks off Thursday in downtown Grand Rapids and surrounding areas.

More than 748 art installations will be exhibited for 18 days in 153 venues, including galleries, storefronts, parks, museums and other public spaces. More than 950 artists from 15 countries will be competing for more than $400,000. The awards will be decided in two categories: By a public vote; and by a jury of art experts. ArtPrize also will distribute more than $200,000 in annual grants to support eligible artists who participate.

For the first time since it was founded by Rick DeVos and launched in 2009, ArtPrize is under the auspices of the city, the Kendall College of Art and Design, and Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. Mayor Rosalynn Bliss told WOOD Radio she's happy about that.

"I'm excited it's under a structure where it truly is a public and private partnership. So, we have some key partners, the expertise that Kendall brings with all of their connections to artists. Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. (DGRI), they've been choreographing large-scale events now for years, and have done a fantastic job."

A private, invitation-only event on Wednesday night called "ArtPrize Eve" will run from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. That will feature a live deejay, musical performances and interactive art experiences.

On Thursday, the ArtPrize Oasis will open at 555 Monroe Avenue along the Grand River. It will feature games, relaxing seating, art installations and activations throughout the duration of ArtPrize. The ArtPrize Clubhouse opens at noon Thursday and will serve as a central hub for visitors and artists. It’s also where artists and donors can pick up their credentials, and the starting point for self-guided art tours.
