Grand Haven Area Schools issue Excessive Heat Notification

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. -- The Grand Haven Area Public Schools will transition to half days for classes Wednesday and Thursday due to the hot temperatures forecasted.

The superintendent's office tells us 10 buildings will be closed in the district. That includes the "Young 5" and kindergarten through 8th grades, as well as Central High School. However, Grand Haven High School will be in session for full days of classes on Wednesday and Thursday.

"Open Door will only be in the AM, no afternoon Open Door," the district posted on social media.

The National Weather Service posted a Heat Advisory on Tuesday that will be in effect from noon Wednesday to 2 a.m. Thursday. It was predicting heat index values of up to 105 degrees in south central and southwest Michigan, including high humidity.

It advised drinking plenty of fluids, staying in air-conditioned rooms when possible, staying out of the sun and checking up on relatives and neighbors. It says young children and pets should not be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
