Police capture five suspects following pursuits in Kent County

WYOMING, Mich. -- Kent County Sheriff's deputies say they have arrested five teenage suspects after a pair of pursuits early Monday morning.

The first incident began around 2:40, when a deputy tried to pull over a van on 28th Street near Hotel Avenue because it had no taillights. They say a slow-speed chase ensued and two people eventually jumped out of the moving van. They then got into a car that was waiting nearby and fled westbound on 28th Street.

A half-hour later, a police officer spotted the car near 44th Street and Division and gave chase. The car crashed on Eastern Avenue at 32nd Street. Once again, the suspects ran from the car. But this time, the suspects were rounded up.

The suspects ran from the car, but the driver was apprehended by a deputy after a foot pursuit. With the assistance of Grand Rapids Police Department Officers, a GRPD K9, and a KCSO drone, the remaining suspects were arrested nearby.  

The Ford Fusion was stolen from Gaines Township the night before and the Dodge Caravan involved was stolen from the City of Wyoming overnight. The ages of the suspects apprehended are:

  • 16-year-old male City of Wyoming
  • Two 13-year-old males City of Wyoming
  • 13-year-old male City of Grand Rapids
  • 18-year-old male City of Grand Rapids
