GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A fugitive is in the Kent County Jail following a string of events early Tuesday afternoon.
The Sheriff's Office says the 30-year-old Grand Rapids man's car had sideswiped another vehicle before crashing into ambulance around noon-time at Leonard Street and Scribner Avenue. Sergeant Eric Brunner says that occurred after the suspect had tried to flee after an attempted traffic stop near Cedar Street and Clancy Avenue. He said deputies quickly called off the chase because of the way the fugitive was driving.
"However, several minutes later at the intersection of Leonard Street and Scribner Avenue the deputies were checking the area and arrived to find this traffic crash that had taken place," Brunner said.
Police say that still did not dissuade the fugitive from trying to flee while still in the vehicle, surrounded by police.
"A pepperball gun was fired into the suspect's vehicle, which eventually gained compliance from the suspect. And he exited his car," Brunner said. "The two (American Medical Response) paramedics were the only occupants in the ambulance."
They were treated for minor injuries at a hospital. The suspect was arrested and evaluated at a hospital before being taken to the jail, where he was booked on multiple charges.
His name was not being released pending formal charges.
