GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- West Michigan Works hosts a healthcare career fair for students from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Grand Rapids Community College's Tassell M-TEC facility.
West Michigan Health Careers Council lead Trevor Meier was a guest on West Michigan's Morning News.
"It's got employers there. They're going to talk to you about their open positions. They're going to interview for some of those positions on the spot. They're even going to hire you for some of those positions right on the spot today."
The healthcare career fair is family-friendly and has a carnival theme.
"So, we'll have a bounce house and a dunk tank, and a glitter-tattoo artist and a balloon animal artist. And even a couple local food trucks on site to really encourage job seekers to not only come out themselves to learn about some healthcare careers, but really bring out their families and have an enjoyable night out together," Meier said.
Since 2001, about 586,000 people are employed in healthcare in Michigan, making it the largest private-sector industry in the state.
Corewell Health is one of the event's sponsors. Formerly called Spectrum Health, it merged with Beaumont Health last year to become the largest private employer in Michigan.
Open positions that will be offered by some of the employers include doctors, nurses and entry-level jobs.
"We're talking medical assistants, nurse aids, and even some non-clinical things. Like food and nutrition, housekeeping and administrative roles like admin assistants or patient registration," Meier said.
Education and training providers will be on-site to discuss healthcare training options in the region. Community partners will be there to talk about some services they offer to help you overcome barriers to employment.
