Ottawa Co. Sheriff's Office identifies woman killed in fireworks explosion

PARK TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Ottawa County Sheriff's deputies have identified the woman who was killed Tuesday night in a fireworks explosion in Park Township.

They say 41-year-old Jana Daniels of Holland died in the fireworks mishap around 11 o'clock that night on Main Street, which is near the north end of Lake Macatawa.

Investigators say an autopsy revealed the cause of death as cardiac laceration due to a shrapnel injury. The death was ruled accidental. Nine other people suffered injuries from the explosion. Five people have been treated and released from area hospitals. Police say the other victims are recuperating.

The explosion sent shrapnel and metal pieces airborne. At least five vehicles and three homes were also damaged due to the blast, with some fragments passing through walls and windows of nearby residences.

The Sheriff's Office says the cause of the explosion is still being investigated. It adds that the device that exploded was not a commercial firework and is believed to have been supplied by one of the people attending the holiday party.

Preliminarily, police think the explosion was accidental.
