Ottawa Co. Clerk supports bill to allow early absentee ballot processing

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Ottawa County Clerk and Register of Deeds Justin Roebuck says he hopes a bill introduced in the Michigan senate last week will become law.

He was a guest on WOOD Radio's West Michigan Morning News.

It would allow municipalities with at least 5,000 residents to process and tabulate absentee ballots on any of the eight days before election day. Roebuck says it is very difficult in large communities to process all of the ballots in one day on a busy election day.

"We've got election workers working through the night on Tuesday night, after the polls close, continuing to process and count those ballots," he said.

A bill introduced in the Michigan senate last week would give election workers a head start in processing the ballots.

"And this legislation would essentially allow an additional week to process those ballots during the day - during the daylight hours, when it's much more transparent. Folks can come in - of course, this is an open process - and watch this process happening," Roebuck said.
