Ninth annual Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give tees off in Belmont

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- A little rain near the start of the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give didn't stop the 9th annual event from getting underway in grand style Thursday morning at the Blythefield Country Club.

About 144 of the world's top female golfers teed off on the scenic course in the Belmont area of Plainfield Township. WOOD Radio was providing some live reports. And the Golf Channel will be providing live television coverage at times during the four rounds of the four-day event.

Tournament Executive Director Cathy Cooper was a guest on West Michigan's Morning News.

"The best part is the LPGA, the players. Everybody has come to support us over the years ... this year we're probably feeling it bigger than ever," she said.

Cooper added, "It's an amazing field of LPGA players here. Ticket sales are out of this world. It's wonderful. Volunteers are over the top and energized and happy."

This year's prize purse is $2.5 million.
