Rep. Huizenga on Senate passage of debt-ceiling bill: 'A slight miracle'

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- President Biden will address the nation at 7 p.m. Friday about the debt ceiling bill Congress passed this week and the budget.

The U.S. Senate approved the measure Thursday after the House passed it Wednesday evening, averting the possibility of a catastrophic government default. The bill now heads to Biden's desk for a signature.

Fourth District Congressman Bill Huizenga was a guest on West Michigan's Morning News.

"A slight miracle did happen in Washington. The Senate actually moved on something," the Zeeland-born Republican joked on WOOD Radio.

On the more serious side, Huizenga said interest rates would have risen along with other economic problems, if the bill had not cleared Congress.

"This is less than perfect; this is less than ideal," he said. "I voted yes along with every other member of the Michigan delegation, except for Rashida Talib. She decided it was too draconian and it was too much."

Rep. Huizenga said he voted for the bill because the consequences of the measure failing would have been drastic.

"Look, at the end of the day, if we had not done this we would have seen interest rates going up. We would have seen some real economic hiccups. And the state of the U.S. economy is challenged right now," he said.
