GRPD: Driver booked in May 11 wrong-way crash with police cruiser

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Grand Rapids Police say a 39-year-old man has been booked on two felony charges in connection with a May 11th head-on crash involving a police officer.

He was awaiting formal charges (arraignment) at the time of publication late Wednesday afternoon.

The crash occurred on Eastern Avenue at Griggs Street around 9:30 the night of May 11th. Police say a car driven by Jack Allen Case crossed the center line and struck the officer's cruiser, allegedly. They say his car's headlights were not on at the time.

The GRPD says Case has now been arrested on charges of Operating While Intoxicated Third Offense and Operating While Intoxicated Causing Serious Injury. He was taken into custody Wednesday.

Police said the officer was injured in the crash and is still recovering at home. Case suffered minor injuries.

According to a GRPD news release: "His recovery is proceeding as expected but it is anticipated to be a few more months before he is cleared to return to duty. On behalf of the officer and the department, GRPD would like to thank the community for the well wishes and support."

“Despite being injured himself, our officer immediately responded to check on the other driver,” said Chief Eric Winstrom. “I am very proud of his actions and am thankful for the other first responders that were on scene so quickly. There could have been a much worse outcome for both drivers and other vehicles in the area.”
