GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- John Ball Zoo says it will hold a Summer Spectacular event June 2nd through June 4th instead of a previously scheduled ribbon cutting next Tuesday.
The event will mark the occasion of the new pygmy hippo habitat at the zoo in Grand Rapids. There will also be a HippoPalooza event in July.
On May 13th, an eight-year-old pygmy hippo fatally attacked an antelope named Chopper while they were introduced to each other for the first time without a mesh fence between them. They were going to live together in the new exhibit.
Pygmy hippos are an endangered animal and one of a handful of zoos accredited to participate in a breeding plan to increase the species' population.
