GRAND RAPIDS TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The inaugural Midwest Prayer Breakfast was held at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park on Friday morning.
Mama Maggie Gobran served as the featured speaker at the sold out, non-partisan event, which was modeled after the annual National Prayer Breakfast in Washington D.C. Hundreds gathered to hear Mama Maggie talk about the work she’s done for children in Egypt though her non-profit organization, Stephen’s Children. The group assists children in a multitude of ways including food, medical attention, schools, summer camps and vocational training. She inspired the crowd of more than 500 people to do what they can to help improve things in their areas of influence.
A news release provided more information:
At this morning’s event, The Midwest Foundation presented a $50,000 check to Mama Maggie to further the work of Stephen’s Children.
“What a powerful and moving sight to see so much support for this new event,” said Kurt Dykstra, former Mayor, City of Holland. “To fill the room for a new event is pretty incredible and it was exciting for everyone to gather as members of the faith community and joyfully worship together.”
Before her speech, Mama Maggie was presented the inaugural Midwest Prayer Breakfast “Faith on Fire” award. The award was created to recognize a person or organization that has put their faith into action in a way that inspires those around them to a deeper faith.
Mama Maggie has been honored with many awards including the 2022 Arab Woman of the Year, the 2020 BBC 100 Inspirational and Influential Women Award, the 2019 International Women of Courage Award from the U.S. Department of State and the 2019 William Wilberforce Award. She has been nominated more than 10 times for the Nobel Peace Prize, most recently in 2022.
The Midwest Prayer Breakfast also featured a performance by The Potter’s House High School Gospel Choir and several bible readings by local spiritual leaders. Organizers are planning to make the Midwest Prayer Breakfast an annual event.
