Some more information from a City of Grand Rapids news release:

Public Service Recognition Week has been celebrated the first week of May since 1985 (beginning on the first Sunday of the month) to honor the people who serve our nation as federal, state, county, local and tribal government employees.

City Manager Mark Washington said the commitment of the City Commission and the City’s 2,200 employees reflect the character, spirit and diversity of the community and deliver the promise of a government by and for the people.

“I am grateful and appreciative of City employees who dedicate their talent, careers and passion to the service of others and continually go above customer expectations,” Washington said. “They truly elevate the quality of life of our residents and customers by performing excellent City services throughout the year. I thank all of them for their commitment to delivering compassionate and caring public services to our West Michigan community.”

Washington also encouraged residents who are not presently engaged, to consider joining the Grand Rapids City workforce by applying for job openings or applying to serve on a board or commission saying, “The invaluable talent, experience and time that you have may transform our community for the better.”
