LEE TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Allegan County Sheriff's investigators say the warning signals at a train crossing were working properly Thursday morning when a vehicle failed to come to a complete stop south of Pullman.
Lt. John Damveld tells us a 54-year-old woman was killed when her vehicle was struck by a train on 108th Avenue at 56th Street.
"It's just a terrible, unfortunate event. And no one likes going to anything like this. We feel very sorry for the family, but we hope people remember that those traffic-control devices at railroad tracks are there for a reason, and to always wear your safety belt," he said.
Police say the Pullman woman was ejected from her vehicle during the crash around 9:30 a.m. in Lee Township. Her name had not been released at the time of publication.
Investigators say they don't thinking speeding or alcohol were involved in the crash.
"The investigation revealed that, unfortunately, the car did not stop at the stop sign at the railroad tracks while heading eastbound. And it collided with a train that was heading southbound," Damveld said.
108th Ave. between 58th St. and 56nd St. was closed for several hours during the investigation.
The Allegan Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Lee Township Fire Department, LIFE EMS, CSX Transportation, and Allegan Central Dispatch.
