MUSKEGON, Mich. -- If you prefer drive-in theaters to the indoor variety, the Getty theater in Muskegon may be the place for you. Season number 80 opens on Wednesday.
Emily Loeks is the director of Community Affairs for the Celebration Cinema theater chain. She tells WOOD Radio you can purchase tickets online at the Celebration Cinema website. Another web link can be found here. Or, you can buy them at the gate.
"The gate opens at 8 and, then, movies begin at sunset," Loeks said. "We have a double feature and you can see two movies for the price of one, for each attendee."
It will be the 80th season for the Getty Drive-In, 920 E. Summit Ave.
Loeks says the summer-time feel is what makes the drive-in great.
"Especially, as the weather gets warmer. Kids come, they string up hammocks between cars. We have people who deck out the back of their truck or their vehicle with pillows. And chairs and cushions; and kind of set up camp," she said.
There also is a playground on site on the theater site, which dates back to 1944.
"This is one of the oldest drive-in movie theaters in the State of Michigan," Loeks said.
She noted that drive-ins began their heyday in the 1950s. That continued on for several days, before dwindling in the 1990s.
"There were close to 4,000 of them in the United States, and there's only 300 left. Only nine left in the State of Michigan, and The Getty is one of the classics. And so, we're eager to kick things off for yet another season," Loeks said.
