GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- We'll find out Friday night the name of the new professional volleyball team in Grand Rapids. And perhaps get a chance to see the team uniforms and logo.
West Michigan Pro Volleyball's franchise name, identity and other details will be unveiled during a first-period ceremony at the Grand Rapids Griffins' final home game of the season against the Rockford IceHogs.
In December, the local franchise became the first member of the fledgling Pro Volleyball Federation, and Grand Rapids' first major league women's sports team.
The inaugural season begins in January 2024. DP Fox Director of Strategic Investments Cole DeVos and West Michigan Pro Volleyball head coach Cathy George will participate in Friday night's ceremony at Van Andel Arena.
The game starts at 7 p.m. It should be a memorable night all around.
A pre-game ceremony will honor Griffins captain Brian Lashoff, who is retiring after the season. The defenseman spent parts of 14 seasons in Grand Rapids and seven seasons with the Detroit Red Wings.
"Obviously, a long career here in Grand Rapids and I can't say enough good things about the people in the organization and the fans of this team, and this city in general. It's been amazing to have come here as an 18-year-old kid. I'm very grateful and lucky to have been able to spend my entire career here," Lashoff told West Michigan's Morning News.
