Kent Co deputies take five teens into custody after stolen-vehicle chase

GAINES TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Five teenagers from the Grand Rapids area are in jail following a police chase in Gaines Charter Township overnight, just south of Kentwood.

Kent County Sheriff's deputies say they spotted a stolen Kia near 60th Street and Division Avenue around 9 o'clock, but it took off before police could pull it over. Then, around 1:15 a.m., they saw the same vehicle on Woodfield Drive near 60th and Eastern Avenue.

Deputies say the teens fled again but ran over some spike strips before turning south onto Division Avenue. It eventually stopped on Regal Avenue. The suspects taken into custody were two 15-year-old boys, a 17-year-old male and a 16-year-old female.

The Sheriff's Office says in a news release:

"This pursuit is an example of what deputies encounter on a regular basis. The KCSO has continued to report a significant uptick in stolen cars over the past few years. Dangerous driving, stolen vehicles used in additional crimes, and the young age of the individuals involved are common factors."

The investigation continues, and the case will be reviewed by the prosecutor's office.
