Pedestrian struck and killed on northbound US-131 at Wealthy St

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Michigan State Police a 49-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed on US-131 late last night near Wealthy Street.

It happened in the northbound lanes around 11 o'clock. Troopers from the MSP Sixth District post say the Grand Rapids man's car had run out of gas, and he tried to cross the expressway with his two children, who are five and seven years old. He walked them to the median and attempted to go back to the vehicle when he was struck.

His name has not been released.

The northbound lanes of the expressway were closed for a while at Hall Street during the police investigation overnight.

State Police remind drivers to say in their vehicle if it becomes disabled on the freeway, until help arrives.
