Grand Rapids city manager launches survey regarding fire chief finalists

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The two finalists to become Grand Rapids' next fire chief answered questions from the public in a community forum last night at City Hall. And now, residents who could not attend can respond to an online survey.

Grand Rapids City Manager Mark Washington is inviting people to share their thoughts on what qualities they would like to see in the city's next fire chief. The responses can be submitted online through 5 p.m. this Friday via this website link.

The two finalists are Dr. Brad Brown, deputy chief of support services for the Grand Rapids Fire Department, and Eloy Vega, fire chief and emergency management coordinator for Port Neches, Texas. Previously, he worked for the fire department in Laredo, TX.

Per a news release from the city:

The survey allows those who did and could not attend the community forum to share their thoughts on what they expect from the next leader of the Grand Rapids Fire Department. The survey contains eight multiple choice questions on each candidate as well as a general statement area per candidate for any feedback survey participants would like to provide. All reviews submitted are received anonymously through the survey link. Statements should be relative to each specific candidate and not general statements outside of that review.

“It is important we have the right leader lead our fire department for the foreseeable future and to ensure the safety and trust of our community,” City Manager Mark Washington said. “That is why we’re encouraging our residents and other community members to participate in the survey and have their voices heard. Input from our neighborhoods and the community is critical to helping us select the right person.”

Public input gathered from survey and the forum will be considered as part of the overall fire chief interview process.

Those who did not have a chance to watch the Fire Chief Candidate Forum can do so on the City’s Facebook and YouTube pages and can learn more about the finalists HERE.
