Prosecutor authorizes assault charges against child in schoolbus attack

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A Kent County juvenile prosecutor has authorized assault and battery charges against an 11-year-old boy, after he allegedly beat up a five-year-old boy on a Northview Public Schools bus.

That happened March 9th. Kent County Sheriff Michelle LaJoye-Young tells WOOD Radio what will happen next in juvenile court.

"There's going to be an assessment of this young man and, obviously, there are consequences for his actions," she said. "But the juvenile system really focuses a lot more on a wholistic approach, trying to see if there's issues that are leading to his behavior. And trying to work through those issues, as well as hold him responsible for his actions."

The schoolbus driver has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues.

The sheriff says it is important for investigators to get a big-picture view of what is going on with the sixth-grader in this case, and determine why he is acting out in an "assaultive way."
