LANSING, Mich. -- A three-time survivor of workplace shootings is one of the people who will be speaking at a news conference this afternoon that will be shown live via a Zoom video link.
Adrienne Trupiano survived the 2009 Henry Ford Community College shooting and two other incidents. The Michigan Senate is scheduled to vote this afternoon on gun-reform legislation. Yesterday, a rally was held outside the state Capitol to support an 11-bill legislative package. Among the guest speakers was former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who suffered a severe brain injury during an assassination attempt in 2011. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and U.S. Representative Elissa Slotkin were two of the other speakers.
Some gun-rights activists heckled the speakers at times. They say the legislation would deny gun owners due process. Republican State Rep. Angela Rigas of Caledonia Township attended the event.
Among the others who will be speaking at the 3 p.m. news conference is Dylan Morris, an Oxford High School shooting survivor who is now the director of a national initiative called "No Future Without Today." They advocate for reform in gun laws.
Today's news conference is being hosted by the group, End Gun Violence Michigan.
