Gov. Whitmer, Democratic lawmakers address gun-control rally

LANSING, Mich. -- A rally was held in support of gun-control legislation Wednesday outside the Michigan Capitol in Lansing.

It came just over a month after a shooting rampage at Michigan State University claimed the lives of three students and wounded five others.

The Michigan Senate was poised to vote on a package of gun-control bills this week. Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin, former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, and Michigan Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks were among the dignitaries who addressed the crowd today, as was Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

"So, the gun-violence prevention majority in the Michigan Legislature - the folks in the building (Capitol) behind me - recently passed a bill requiring background checks for all firearm purchases," Whitmer said.

Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was among the guest speakers. She suffered a severe brain injury during an assassination attempt in 2011:

"Change doesn't happen overnight," she said. "I can't do it alone. Join me. Let's move ahead together. Amen."

Some counter-protestors attended the event, as well, as you could hear them shouting at times over those speaking in support of gun control. Gun-right activists have said the 11-bill package of legislation would deny gun owners due process.
