KCSO arrests seven teens possibly connected to multiple purse snatchings

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Kent County Sheriff's investigators think a group of seven teenagers arrested in Cascade Township this morning may be linked to other recent purse snatchings in the county.

A KCSO patrol sergeant spotted a stolen Jeep in the area of 28th Street and I-96 and it was tracked to a nearby hotel. Police say some deputies and a detectives were summoned and started converging on the vehicle in a parking lot.

"The Jeep attempted to flee the parking pace and struck a detective's vehicle and a police cruiser. Five people were taken into custody," the sheriff's office wrote in a news release.

Two more people in a hotel room were arrested, and some stolen property was retrieved. That included purses from some recent thefts, a stolen handgun and other merchandise.

Per the news release:

"All seven suspects have been arrested: a 19 and 16-year-old female from Grand Rapids, a 17-year-old and two 16-year-old males from Grand Rapids, an 18-year-old male from Plainfield Township, and a 17-year-old male from Gaines Township.

This case will be sent to the prosecutor's office for review of charges related to the stolen car, firearm, and stolen property. It is believed that this group may be related to other purse snatchings within our area. We are coordinating efforts with our law enforcement partners and MPACT (the Metro Pattern Crimes Task Force).
