Michigan Homeowner Assistance Fund has helped 16,000 in one year

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Michigan Homeowner Assistance Fund has provided more than 115-million dollars in COVID-19 relief funds to about 16-thousand homeowners since launching a grant program a year ago this month.

The program is run through the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, and its Director of Home Ownership is Mary Townley. She was a guest Friday on West Michigan's Morning News, on WOOD Radio. She explained what qualifies for assistance:

"Either a decline of income due to COVID, or an increase in living expenses due to COVID. Or, an increase in living expenses due to COVID. They can apply online. They also must own and occupy the home as their principal residence," Townley said.

Also, the household income can't exceed 150 percent of the area median income.

To qualify for MIHAF, applicants must have experienced a financial hardship directly related to COVID-19 on or after January 21, 2020, or dealt with a qualified hardship that began before January 21, 2020, but continued after that date. Households also qualify if the household income is less than 150% of the Area Median Income (AMI). The property must be owner-occupied.

"We will assist with delinquent mortgage payments, delinquent property taxes, and even utility payments," Townley said. "You know, electricity, gas, water, sewer. Those types of utilities."

The homeowners' assistance is provided on a first come, first-served basis.

"So, I would recommend that anyone who has a COVID-19 hardship delinquency on their housing to go online and apply," Townley said.
