EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Police say the suspect in Monday night's shooting spree at Michigan State University was carrying two 9-millimeter handguns, two magazines and 50 rounds of ammunition.
At a news conference Thursday, Michigan State Police Lieutenant Rene Gonzalez said a note found on the shooter may hint at a possible motive, but that information is not being released yet.
Five students were critically injured and three died. Gonzalez revealed what was found at the gunman's house afterward.
"At the residence, a cellphone was collected, journals of sorts, miscellaneous writings and fired 9-millimeter casings. (The gunman's father) was also interviewed on scene by the MSP detectives at the Lansing Operations building," Gonzalez said.
Police say the suspect purchased the two handguns legally. Chief of MSU Police Marlon Lynch said students at the site of the shooting helped render aid to those wounded by the gunman and gave them a chance to survive by doing so.
Michigan State interim president Teresa Woodruff provided an update on what campus buildings are open and closed.
"University offices are open, but in this case with wide latitude provided to supervisors across our university network," Woodruff said. "Berkey remains closed for the remainder of the semester. The second building, the Union, is still being evaluated."
Classes resume on Monday at Michigan State University.
