Survey finds many higher ed employees feeling trapped in job

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A survey shows more and higher education employees feel trapped in a dead-end job.

Matt Bennett is founder and C-E-O of Christian Union, which develops Christian leaders. He was a guest on West Michigan's Morning News. He told WOOD Radio there is not a clear path of advancement for many teachers and many universities are cutting back on staff due to lower enrollment.

"Universities have gotten so big so much because of free money," Bennett said. "Government money coming in and then tuition going higher and higher because the prices are largely an elastic parents will pay if they have the money. And so, they've gotten very bloated as a means of trying to compete with other universities."

CampusReform.org reports an open-ended survey of more than 150 college employees found that many were expressing frustration ovr things such as pay, bureaucracy and the lack of advancement opportunities.

The survey responses reflect reports that university spending on administrative positions is outpacing instructional spending.
