11 a.m. update: Plainfield Township Fire Chief Steve McKellar says the victim of the fire has been identified as Steven Dood, age 71. He says an autopsy indicated that Dood died from smoke inhalation.

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- An autopsy is being conducted this morning on an adult whose body was found inside a mixed-use apartment building after a late-night fire in Plainfield Township.
At the time of publication, the person's age, name and gender had not been released.
It broke out around 11 o'clock on Plainfield Avenue near Coit Avenue. The victim's name, age and gender have not been released yet. Plainfield Township Fire Chief Steve McKellar told WOOD radio that Plainfield Township Fire, the Kent County Sheriff's Office and the Michigan State Police Fire Investigations office all will be investigating the cause of the fire.
Chief McKellar said the apartment units are upstairs in the building, which had extensive damage after the fire. An insurance office is on the first floor.
He said crews from eight fire departments investigated the fire.
The chief said more details will be released after the autopsy.
