East Grand Rapids police investigate fatal shooting

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- East Grand Rapids Police are conducting a co-investigation with the Grand Rapids Police Detective Unit following a pair of shooting-related incidents overnight.

East Grand Rapids Police Chief Mark Herald tells WOOD Radio that officers were dispatched around 12:30 a.m. to Lake Drive and Plymouth Avenue.

"Upon arrival, we observed an individual who was on the ground. He was bleeding," Herald said. "Our officers determined that he needed CPR. So, our officers immediately gave CPR and they called for an ambulance. Once the ambulance got to the scene, the individual was determined to be deceased. And he was pronounced dead at the scene."

The victim's name and hometown had not been released at the time of publication.

Chief Herald said there was a gunshot report right around the same time as the East Grand Rapids shooting this morning in Grand Rapids. That prompted investigators from both police departments to investigate to see if the incidents might be connected.

"We have been working with the Grand Rapids Detective Unit on these two incidents," Herald said. "So what we always ask community members to do is, please, if there was something that occurred last night around 12:30 a.m. - cars going down the street, something that seemed odd - give us a call. Or, if you saw something, it's very important to give us a call ... nowadays, people have a lot of video-safety systems ... and they capture a lot of information."

The phone number for East Grand Rapids Public Safety is (616)-949-7010. The number for Silent Observer is: (616) 774-2345.
