GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Ten busloads of pro-life supporters - or about 500 people - will travel to our nation's Capitol on Friday for the annual March for Life events.
Grand Rapids Right to Life is organizing the trip to Washington, D.C.
January 22nd will mark the 50-year anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion.
Grand Rapids Right to Life president Laura Alexandria tells WOOD Radio this year's march is special because the High Court overturned Roe-v-Wade last June. The landmark case of Dobbs-v-Jackson Women's Health Organization determined that the U.S. Constitution does not confer a right to abortion.
But Alexandria pointed out that Michigan voters passed Proposal 3 last year to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution.
"Something that would help our state tremendously from a Pro Life perspective is if a national law was passed that could undo some of the damage that Proposal 3 will eventually wreak on our state," Alexandria said.
The March for Life rally will start at noon Friday, and the March itself will begin at 1 p.m.
"Hundreds of thousands of people will march down Constitution Avenue around the Capitol, ending near the House of Representative and the Supreme Court," Alexandria said.
Featured speakers at the March for Life rally include Jonathan Roumie, who portrays Jesus in the film series The Chosen; Tony Dungy, an NFL Super Bowl-winning player and coach; Rev. Franklin Graham; and U.S. Representatives Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Steve Scalise (R-LA).
The 2023 theme is “Next Steps: Marching in a Post-Roe America.”
