Kent County Sheriff's Office investigates more thefts from vehicles

GRAND RAPIDS TOWNSHIP -- The number of vehicles broken into in Kent County so far this month is on pace to surpass the 471 total break-ins recorded last year, if it continues at the same rate.

The Kent County Sheriff's Office says the latest smash-and-grab happened in a business parking lot on East Paris Avenue south of Cascade Road, around 10 a.m. Wednesday.

"Stolen vehicles are often used in the commission of these break-ins and thieves are breaking windows if they see anything sitting out inside the vehicle," the KCSO said in a news release.

Retirement centers in Grand Rapids Township have been hit hard by the thefts, as well as gym and workout centers along the 28th Street corridor in Cascade Township.

Deputies describe the suspects as two younger black males. One was wearing a dark-colored "puffy coat". The two sped off in a maroon-colored SUV.

In December, some suspects in a vehicle break-in in Gaines Township were arrested following a chase that resulted in a crash.

"On December 29th, 2022 detectives located a vehicle stolen out of the City of Kentwood traveling towards Caledonia Village," the KCSO said. "The vehicle started to drive through business lots and a high-risk stop was initiated. Five juveniles ran from the car but were subsequently caught. All five were arrested on charges related to the stolen car. Their ages range from 14 years old to 17 years old, all are from the Grand Rapids Metro area."

Police advise you to remove any personal belongings from your car, if possible. Otherwise, keep them out of sight, because vehicles are being broken into even when they are locked up.

If you have information that could help to move the investigation forward, the KCSO asks you to call them at 616-632-6125, or phone Silent Observer at 616-774-2345.
