GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- For the first time since 2010, the We The People team from East Kentwood High School has won the state championship in the student constitutional competition.
It is run through the Center for Civic Education. Kentwood Public Schools spokesman Tim Hargis tells WOOD Radio it is a significant achievement.
"We are so proud of the accomplishments our students participants from the We The People team and the coaches. Their work and effort was impressive. And they certainly represent the excellent that we strive for in the Kentwood Public Schools," Hargis said in a phone interview.
The team’s performance this past weekend also recorded the highest scorein team history for East Kentwood. The East Kentwood team consisted of six individual units that competed in the state finals. Three of those units won state championships for their content. The other three East Kentwood units finished second for their work.
The students will now compete with about 50 other top teams from around the nation.
"We look forward to great things ahead for them as they compete in the national finals in Washington, D.C., in April," Hargis said.
