U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow announces she won't seek re-election in 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Michigan U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow says she won't seek re-election next year.

“Inspired by a new generation of leaders, I have decided to pass the torch in the U.S. Senate. I am announcing today that I will not seek re-election and will leave the U.S. Senate at the end of my term on January 3, 2025," Stabenow said in a written statement.

Stabenow began her political career in 1974 at age 24, when she was elected to the Ingham County Commission. When she ran for the state legislature in 1978, there were no women serving in the Michigan Senate. Now, there are 15.

"Women hold the top three statewide elected offices, and we have the first female Majority Leader in the State Senate," Stabenow said.

Stabenow said she plans to serve the state outside of elected after her term ends in the U.S. Senate.

Her full statement can be read here.
