Two people die in crash on 14 Mile Road in Oakfield Township

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Michigan State Police are investigating a double-fatality accident that occurred Friday afternoon when a tandem tractor-trailer slammed into the back of an SUV that was slowing to make a turn on M-57.

MSP says a preliminary investigation revealed the SUV was about to make a turn from eastbound 14 Mile Road onto northbound Lappley Avenue when it was hit by the double trailer semi. Troopers say the impact caused the SUV to go into the westbound lane and into the path of an ambulance, causing the ambulance to overturn.

Police say the driver and passenger of the SUV were declared dead at the scene. The driver of the semi and ambulance personnel suffered minor injuries. MSP had not released the names and hometowns of the victims as of the time of this report.

M-57 (14 Mile Road) was closed between Harvard and Wabasis avenues for about four hours.

Crews from the Kent County Sheriff's Office, Rockford Ambulance, Oakfield Township Fir and the Kent County Medical Examiner all responded to the scene.
