Barry Croft Jr. sentenced in Gov. Whitmer kidnapping plot

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A co-conspirator in the plot to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer faces 19-and-a-half years in prison after being sentenced in a federal court Wednesday.

U.S. District Judge Robert Jonker described Barry Croft Jr. of Delaware as the "ideas guy" in the plot and "very convincing" in getting people to support his views. The judge sentenced the other conspirator, Adam Fox of Wyoming (MI.) to 16 years in prison on Tuesday.

The plot was in response to the COVID-19 restrictions the Governor had placed on Michigan residents.

Prosecutors originally sought a life sentence for Croft Jr. His defense attorney, Joshua Blanchard, told CBS News Radio he plans to appeal the sentence, but appreciates that the judge adjusted the sentencing guidelines. Blanchard said the sentencing guidelines had overstated the seriousness of the offense.
