GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Grand Rapids Griffins were the first American Hockey League to host an Mental Health Awareness Night during a game as part of the Hockey Talks campaign. And they will do it again Jan. 7 when they host the Texas Stars in a game sponsored by Comerica Bank.
The Mental Health Awareness Night will be held with the help of the i understand nonprofit organization. It offers compassionate comfort for those affected by suicide or mental/brain health illness and pain. The Vancouver Canucks started the Hockey Talks campaign.
The Griffins will wear a sticker on their helmets to show support for people facing mental-health challenges. Fans are being asked by the organizations share personal messages and support on social media to create an open dialogue about mental health by using the hashtag #HockeyTalks and #iunderstandloveheals.
"I applaud the Griffins for recognizing the importance of mental health and the sensory needs of others with this meaningful game,” i understand founder Vonnie Woodrick said. “We are proud to partner with the Griffins to raise awareness, provide a place of calm for those who many need it, and to bring the conversation to the forefront at Van Andel Arena.”
