GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Salvation Army is ending its West Michigan bellringing early Thursday evening due to the winter storm and dangerously low temperatures that are forecasted.
Bellringing collections may be canceled Friday, as well.
Salvation Army spokeswoman Merri Bennett said that will put a crimp on last-minute Christmas shopping. So, the combination of no collection kettles and fewer shoppers on Friday will impact donations.
“The last two days are typically two of the largest donation days,” Grand Valley Area Commander Major Tim Meyer said. “If shoppers are forced to stay home, that will hurt donations significantly, making it almost impossible to meet our $1.7 million dollar goal.”
Bell ringing is scheduled to resume on Christmas Eve day, the last day of the kettle campaign.
“I’m very concerned of course,” Meyer said. “but people’s safety is our first and most important concern. All we can do is the best we can and pray for the best results.”
Donations can still be made by mail or online. The Salvation Army said, thanks to an anonymous donor, donations made now through New Year’s Eve will be matched dollar-for-dollar until December 31st. The anonymous donor has committed to matching up to $80,000.
